Vacancy at Anusandhan Trust - Head of Institution, SATHI Pune

We are looking for a person to lead and manage the activities of SATHI (Support for Advocacy and Training to Health Initiatives), Pune, an institution engaged in research and advocacy linked to community action on public health and health systems.

Anusandhan Trust (AT) – through its centres – engages in research, education, training, intervention and policy advocacy on relevant themes. Its two current centres focus on health and allied issues.

SATHI, beginning in 1998 as a project of CEHAT (AT’s first centre), has grown to be an autonomous centre of AT. Our work presently spans three major programs at local and national levels: social action on public health systems, community action for nutrition, and social accountability of private healthcare. Our grants total to about Rs. 4 crores annually.

SATHI has pioneered health rights approaches across India, promoting accountability of the public and the private health sector. We foster inter-sectoral community action through partnerships with civil society organizations. We operate from our own premises in Pune, with a multidisciplinary team of 15 professionals qualified in the various fields of social sciences and medicine/public health. Our team is committed to democratic processes and practices inclusive and participatory decision-making at all levels in the organisation.


The advertised position is the senior most in the organization. The incumbent is expected to

  • Function as the head of the institution, providing guidance and expertise to program and support staff.
  • Lead and manage the institution's current programmes and develop new areas.
  • Work consultatively with the programme teams to develop effective strategies for realising the organisational vision.  
  • Raise resources for the institution and liaison with funding agencies.  
  • Represent SATHI in various fora, and network with relevant organisations including grassroots CSOs, the government and other stakeholders.
  • Through all of the above, to determine and invoke a shared vision across stakeholders, anchor direction, reconcile tensions, manage boundaries, develop team skills and enhance the organisation’s profile.

SATHI’S head of the institution is required to act in close liaison with the Board of trustees and other organs of Anusandhan Trust.

Candidates who apply must meet the following requirements:


  • Postgraduate or PhD degree in the social sciences/medicine/public health.
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience spanning research, social action and policy advocacy.
  • Good writing skills and a robust publication record.
  • Good command of written and spoken English, and also conversant with either Marathi or Hindi. (Field projects are implemented with local CSOs in rural/tribal areas of Maharashtra. The incumbent must be able to communicate directly with the field personnel).
  • Ability to conceptualise programmes, write proposals and raise grants. 
  • Strong administrative and managerial abilities including familiarity with accounts and finance details. 
  • Must have networked with grassroots actors, health action groups and civil society organisations.
  • Be aware of current issues in the health sector, social development, and health movements.


  • Specific experience in all or any of the following areas will be highly valued: research linked to action public health, community-based health action, social accountability processes and health system advocacy.
  • Experience of leading a team of 10-12 professionals and working on large-scale collaborative projects spanning multiple institutions.
  • A drive to contribute and manage advocacy campaigns.

Other things being equal, women candidates and candidates with a disability will be given preference. Salary is commensurate with experience (CTC in the range Rs.12-15 lakhs per annum). Promising candidates with less than stated experience will be considered at suitable salary levels. The salary includes social security benefits. This is a term-bound position for a period of three years extendable up to six years at the discretion of the Trust.

Anusandhan Trust (AT) was established in 1991 to establish and run democratically managed institutions to research health and allied themes, provide education and training, and initiate and participate in advocacy efforts on relevant issues concerned with the well-being of the disadvantaged and the poor – in collaboration with other organizations and individuals working with and for such people. Our core commitment is to underprivileged people and their organizations.

Social relevance, ethics, democracy and accountability are the four operative principles that drive and underpin the activities of Anusandhan Trust’s institutions. We emphasize high professional standards.

The centres of the Trust are organised around either a specific activity (research, intervention, services and advocacy) or theme (health services and financing, ethics, primary healthcare, women and health, etc.). Each centre has its specific goal and set of activities to advance the vision of the Trust. Currently, there are two centres.

CEHAT (Centre for Enquiry into Health and Allied Themes), Mumbai, was established in 1994 and focuses on social and public health research and policy advocacy.

SATHI (Support for Advocacy and Training in Health Initiatives), Pune, undertakes community-based health action, intervention for health sector social accountability, research and advocacy related to health systems, with a focus on Maharashtra. Nationally, it facilitates mobilization and policy advocacy on health rights and related issues.
