upport for Advocacy and Training to Health Initiatives
(In several Indian languages, SATHI means 'companion')
(December 2001 to October 2004)

The focus of work of the SATHI cell is Primary Health Care; working to support initiatives with specific rights based approach. The shift from a 'project-mode' in Arogya Sathi project to 'cell-mode' has given more flexibility to choose the appropriate issues and time to conduct specific activities.

Aim of the project is To support the development of a broad-based health movement by offering training and advocacy related inputs to various organisations taking up health initiatives.

Specific Objectives of the project are
1.Strengthening the existing health programmes and advocacy in Dahanu, Ajara and Badwani
2. Establishing linkages with other organisations on the issue of health rights
3. Empowering people by helping them to develop health related skills and awareness
4. Influencing health policy on key health issues both locally and at the state level in Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh
5. Assisting the development of relevant knowledge base for advocacy and training by means of selected action-research

To fulfill these objectives, a range of activities is undertaken by this cell such as:

  • Support to the Peoples' Organisations in the project areas for strengthening of health worker program, for local advocacy

  • Training inputs and organisational guidance to organisations other than these partner organisations

  • Support to local as well as state level health advocacy activities with other groups in Maharashtra / West Madhya Pradesh related to Primary Health Care and Health rights

  • Development of relevant training, advocacy and awareness material

  • Action research

    Expected Project OutcomesQuantifiable outcomes
    1.Community-based health worker programmes in 4 –5 project areas
    2.Reduction in medical expenses and improved accessibility of first contact care in 4-5 project areas where Community Health Workers are functioning
    3.Development of specific training and awareness materials to support relevant activities
    4.Awareness generation programmes and advocacy actions at the local level in various areas
    5.Advocacy initiatives on specific issues at the state level in Maharashtra and at the regional level in MP.
    6.Action research studies on specific health issues like Micro-level studies on Health services, surveillance related studies
    7.Documentation of herbal remedies for Primary Health Care

    Non-quantifiable outcomes
    1.Enhanced awareness about medical exploitation and health rights among people in various areas
    2.Increased involvement of local organisations in health issues and raised awareness on specific health issues among their activists
    3.Strengthening of local organisations and their ability to deal with livelihood issues as a result of their health initiatives
    4.Empowerment of women in areas where project interventions have occurred because of increased health skills and more woman-sensitive attitudes emerging from health activities
