INTEGRATING GENDER IN MEDICAL EDUCATION - SECOND “TRAINING OF TRAINERS” PROGRAMME

CEHAT is pleased to announce the second ”Training of Trainers” course of the GME project to be held from 10th to 14th February, 2015. This course builds on the previous trainings conducted in 2014 in Mumbai and will be attended by medical teachers from seven participating medical colleges in Maharashtra. This is the final phase of the “Training of Trainers” course of the project. In addition to undergoing a refresher on conceptual understanding of gender and its relation to health, and issues of access to abortion and prevention of sex selection, participants will receive training on course modules such as ‘Mainstreaming gender in undergraduate medical education’, ‘Understanding role of gender and rights in health care settings’, ‘Planning for gender-sensitive and client-centred health care services’, and ‘Gender and mental health’, through lectures, participatory activities, presentations and panel discussions. This training will also include a visit to Dilaasa- a crisis centre for women facing domestic violence at Bhabha Hospital, Bandra. An important component of this training is to develop gender-sensitive modules for incorporating into the undergraduate teaching of each of the selected subjects, namely, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Preventive and Social Medicine, Forensic Medicine and Toxicology, General Medicine and Psychiatry. For this purpose, a workshop of a day and a half is included as a part of this phase of training. During this workshop, participants will be working in department-wise groups with mentors who are experts from each of the subjects. Participants are expected to respond to suggested modules for incorporation, plan appropriate methodology and present the output. These modules will then be included by participants into their classroom teaching in appropriate semesters of the MBBS curriculum. Participants will receive mentoring support during this process and can also make use of the project website for accessing and disseminating resources.
