Prof. Sarah Hodges, MA PhD in History from the University of Chicago will be delivering Anusandhan Trust’s 10th K.R. Memorial lecture on September 18, 2019 at MLT Hall, KEM Hospital, Mumbai.  The lecture is being hosted by CEHAT in collaboration with Kind Edward Memorial Hospital and e-Social Sciences. Dr. Hodges is a scholar of socio- cultural history of modern South Asia, specifically the politics of health in colonial and postcolonial India. In this lecture Dr Hodges will explore the use of disposables in the context of the long history of 20thcentury sanitary science. The widespread adoption of single-use disposable medical plastics consolidated a century's worth of changes in medical hygiene. The initial uptake of medical plastics was not, surprisingly, driven primarily by concerns about hygiene but as a technology of convenience and durability. The new processional infrastructure of disposable single-use medical plastics, hygiene has produced another, albeit unintended, consequence, viz., the exponentially increasing hospitals' material outputs. Plastic has refigured the ecologies of everyday medicine.
