CEHAT is organised Public lecture on 16th February, 2018 by Dr. Mary Ellsberg where she would speak of 'Global initiatives to respond to Violence against Women' and evidence based lessons on what works in different sectors, health being one. She will also throw light on what comprises a health system approach and share evidence from her evaluations of health systems response to VAW. We will also get an opportunity to share our questions and experiences.
Dr Mary Ellsberg is the Founding Director of the Global Women's Institute at the George Washington University in Washington, D.C., USA. She is an accomplished author with more than 30 years of experience in international research and program work focused on gender-based violence, health, and human rights. Dr. Ellsberg's deep connection to global gender issues stems not only from her academic work but also from living in Nicaragua for nearly 20 years leading public health and women's rights advocacy. Dr Mary earlier served as the vice president of programs and research at the International Center for Research on Women (ICRW). Dr Ellsberg has been one of the key researchers who brought out evidence through a multi-national study to understand the prevalence of violence against women in 2002. Since then, she has carried out a body of research on measurement of VAW, health systems response to VAW and evidence on what works and what does not in the health sector.
Violence against women and girls is a worldwide phenomenon. Though there are many grass root and international approaches to addressing the issue, we also need to reflect and examine the effectiveness of these. While CEHAT has approached VAW as a public health and human rights issue, there are many other ways to address it. Despite these initiatives, violence continues to be a persistent and widespread threat to women. Dr Ellsberg, with her vast experience and expertise in researching VAW at an international level, would be able to provide a unique understanding of VAW.
